In an interview with Joe Rogan, Mark Zuckerberg revealed that the Oculus would be getting a much-needed hardware upgrade this year, with the release of an ‘Oculus Quest Pro’ in October and a reveal expected in September during the Meta Connect 2022.
Zuckerberg partook in the world-famous Joe Rogan podcast, with the tech mogul revealing that the Pro is a significant step up from previous iterations of the hardware.
In conversation with Rogan, the Meta executive also revealed that the upgraded headset would feature new features such as eye tracking, enabling users to make proper eye contact with NPCs within VR.
Although little is known about the upgraded headset, it is seemingly out of production and ready for launch, with both Zuckerberg and Rogan demoing the headset before the podcast went live.
Meta has been working on VR headsets since the company acquired Oculus in 2014. Last year, Zuckerberg announced that Meta was working on the following VR headset, called Project Cambria, at the time. Metaverse Insider had listed it in the upcoming projects that Meta was involved in working on their Metaverse.
These headsets are a higher-end version of the Quest headsets which should track the users’ hand movements without any controllers. Moreover, these headsets have features such as controlling the user’s eye movements and facial expressions. Recently, Zuckerberg gave a sneak peek of the headset on social media, but the headset itself was blurred out.
With over a month left for its release date, there is still much to learn about Project Cambria, including the name of the VR headset. Meta is looking to solidify its place in the VR headset market and establish a lead as they continue to work on improving these headsets. The price for the headset is unknown but based on previous price points for its other Oculus headsets, it may not be as expensive as some have predicted. The new Oculus Quest Pro will likely be highly competitive amongst its competitors, offering an affordable price point for the average techie.
Of course, an upgraded edition to the Oculus headset was much needed, with the Oculus Quest 2 becoming outdated compared to other competitors on the market. Despite strong sales, a newly upgraded headset was required to stay ahead of competitors in the VR space.
Alongside the reveal, both Rogan and Zuckerberg touched base on the future of VR, how VR and AR differ in development and consequence and what the future may look like in a new metaverse reality.
