Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg — maybe not unsurprisingly — claimed that Meta’s Quest 3 headset outshines Apple’s recently launched Vision Pro.
Zuckerberg’s made the assertions on a video on Instagram, where he labeled the Quest 3 as “the better value” and unequivocally “the better product, period.”
This statement comes amidst escalating rivalry between Meta and Apple, as both tech giants vie to captivate consumers with their mixed reality offerings that blend digital overlays with real-world views or fully immersive virtual reality experiences.
Meta has strategically positioned itself in the market by focusing on affordability, whereas Apple has opted for a high-end approach, emphasizing superior screen resolution, advanced processors, and premium materials.
Despite these differences, Zuckerberg highlighted several advantages of the Quest 3 in his video, including its comfort, expansive content library, wider field of view, precise hand tracking, and brighter screen. He conceded that Apple’s Vision Pro boasts higher screen resolution and impressive eye tracking but questioned the justification of its hefty price tag, which is $3,000 more than the Quest 3.
The Vision Pro, priced at $3,500, marks Apple’s first foray into a new product category since the introduction of the Apple Watch in 2015.
Apple CEO Tim Cook described the Vision Pro as “tomorrow’s technology today.” He told CNBC’s Jim Cramer, “We think we priced it at the right level considering the value of it.”
On the other hand, Meta released the Quest 3 in September, with the device hitting the shelves a month later at a starting price of $500. A notable feature of the Quest 3 is its “passthrough” mode, allowing users to see the external environment through the headset, a functionality that the Vision Pro also offers.
Zuckerberg also took the opportunity to take a swipe at Apple fans in the video, saying: “Now look, I know that some fanboys get upset whenever somebody dares to question if Apple is going to be the leader in a new category, but the reality is that every generation of computing has an open and a closed model. And yeah, in mobile, Apple’s closed model won. It’s not always that way. If you go back to the PC era, Microsoft’s open model was the winner. In this next generation, Meta is going to be the open model, and I really want to make sure that the open model wins out again. The future is not yet written.”
