The technology giant Sony has been forced to stop producing new PlayStation VR 2 devices. This drastic measure comes after the company’s initial production significantly outpaced sales. Despite its initial promise, the PSVR2 has only managed to sell around 1.7 million units, a stark contrast to the 2 million units Sony optimistically manufactured for launch. This mismatch has resulted in a daunting warehouse surplus.
Sony suspended the production of further units to reduce the surplus until this surplus was eradicated. Although the jury is out on why the PSVR 2 has failed to live up to Sony’s targets, there has been much criticism from the gaming community regarding limited game libraries and an expensive price point for the device, which has likely hindered numbers.
Similarly, PlayStation has faced considerable criticism from consumers on its current stance on games of service and lack of support for the PSVR2 headset just one year after its launch. Rumors suggest the Japanese gaming manufacturer is looking to move its attention away from virtual reality gaming.
Ultimately, PSVR2 is facing tough competition from Meta Quest and Apple Vision Pro, and it is failing to offer anything unique to gamers looking to use virtual reality with high costs and limited game/app libraries. The future of PlayStation VR is uncertain, but it does not look promising.
