According to a study published in the Optica Publishing Group journal, researchers from the University of Tokyo have created holographic images using smartphone technology.
Utilizing computer-generated holography, researchers ditched the traditional use of lasers to generate holographic images. Instead, they used an iPhone 14 Pro and a spatial light modulator to create an optical reproduction of a holographic image.
Researchers are looking to improve the technology to make models look more realistic with additional layers of realism with the breakthrough potentially improving the performance of immersive headsets in the future:
“More specifically, it has the potential to enhance the performance of near-eye displays, such as the ones used in high-end virtual reality headsets,” said Otoya Shigematsu, the paper’s author.
Furthermore, Mr. Shigematsu implied that using smartphone technology to produce holograms could reduce costs and improve eye condition:
“We believe that this method could eventually be useful for minimizing the optics, reducing costs and decreasing the potential harm to eyes in future visual interfaces and 3D display applications,”.
Overall, this study presents exciting findings in producing holographic displays, which have positive implications for making immersive technology such as VR more immersive and less expensive.
